The Unclaimed Property Victory Lap - SMwA Readers Share Their Wins
Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew!
A few weeks ago, I urged readers to check to see if they have unclaimed property. Since then, I’ve heard from several about their unclaimed property wins:
“Found a $272 credit card overpayment!”
“This reminded me to do a search again for friends and family. Found $50 for my father in law!”
“Under $25, probably a tuition overpayment from college from 20 years ago”
“I got a $43.99 check in the mail from Amex today!”
“I just got a $36 check for a forgotten eBay gift certificate!”
“I found a refund check for a health insurance overpayment”
I got so excited from hearing from readers, I got carried away and looked up a bunch of my own friends, finding several with unclaimed property. Most of them were overjoyed to hear about a quick and free way to retrieve money in their name—in one case, the amount was significant (hundreds of dollars), in others it was smaller but still meaningful amounts of money ($30-50+).
After doing this, I realized there are literally tens of millions of Americans with unclaimed funds just sitting there.[1] And so readers, I urge you to do this today:
Go to MissingMoney.com
Look up at least 3-5 close friends or relatives (people who would not be extremely creeped out if you told them they had unclaimed property).
If anyone has unclaimed property, and it’s likely someone will, explain to them how to claim it.
I hope to turn this into an annual trend. Go forth and help your fellow citizens! And if you have any great success stories, please let me know by replying to this email.
And now, Andrew’s pick(s) of the week:
