Alyssa's Lessons in Links
Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew!
I enormously enjoyed last week’s interview with Alyssa, and admire so many of her values. Below, I’ve linked to some useful posts next to quotes from the interview:
“[We] were at the library so much the librarians became friends”: When Free Is Better Than Cheap
“Our savings priorities include saving up for taxes (self-employment and property), retirement, and college.” Starting A 529 Account Early
“We also give to our local church, to family members who are missionaries, and we support other charities.” Saving Money on Charitable Giving - A Brief Introduction to Donor-Advised Funds
“I always appreciate the small wins and little tips to save money. Andrew also got me hooked on cashback! Last summer we went through Rakuten to book two hotel rooms for a road trip and got 10% cash back on both!” Cashback Shopping for Beginners
“[We] economize on streaming services” Saving Money on Streaming Services. Some of these tips are dated, and streaming price increases have gotten a bit extreme ($18/month for ad-free Hulu?!), but there are still some good ideas here. Students, for example, still have amazing deals on Amazon Prime and the Spotify/Hulu bundle.
And now, Andrew’s pick(s) of the week:
I was shocked to hear that 7% of US school districts, and much larger percentages in a handful of states, have shifted to a four-day school week. This Planet Money episode is a terrific story about this unsettling trend and I’d love to hear from any readers in a district that made this shift.
