Unclaimed Property - The Greatest Father's Day Gift Of All
Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew!
Thanks to an email from a helpful reader last year, I’ve started an annual tradition that I mark on my to-do list. Each year in June, I go to my state’s unclaimed property website (find your state here) and search. Last year turned up a small refund check, and this year we found a check from a prior employer sent to an old address from the mid-2010’s which we’re eagerly awaiting.
There’s a great chance you have unclaimed property (1 in 7 Americans does!) and it could be significant, with states returning over $4 billion in unclaimed property to its rightful owners each year. So please take a few minutes to find your state and search!
Almost as fun as looking for your own unclaimed property? Typing in the names of friends and relatives, and looking to see if they have any. A few searches turned up significant unclaimed property for in-laws and other relatives as well as many friends, ranging from insurance refunds, to unused gift cards, store refunds, and more.
But watch out, it’s not easy to drop unclaimed property into a casual conversation without looking like a weirdo (or an SMwA reader)!
If you find anything for yourself, please send me a quick email to let me know about your success story. And if you recommend that a friend or relative search for their own unclaimed property, please consider telling them about SMwA!
And now, Andrew’s pick(s) of the week:
The Tao of ‘Smooth,’ Rock’s Enduring, Inescapable Earworm - Call me basic, but I really like Smooth! There’s a reason that, according to Billboard, it’s the third-most popular song of all time.
Also, Bohemian Rhapsody in Latin, Coptic, and Greek
I hope this has been helpful. If you liked it, please share it on social media! Also, please send me your feedback, requests, and success stories.
