Some Vacation Picks
Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew! I’m off this week, but thought I’d leave you guys some quick notes and a few favorite links for the week.
The WSJ’s coverage of the ongoing car shortage has been terrific, with recent pieces on how used car prices have gone crazy and some good tips if you absolutely have to buy a car right now. Sign of the times: the hybrid Honda CR-V we bought in April for $30,000 now sells in the $32,000-33,000 range, with one-year old used models selling for more than $30,000.
I really enjoyed Katie Baker’s The Day the Good Internet Died, a piece that asserts that the “Good Internet” ended on that fateful day in 2013 when Google shut down Google Reader, ushering the social media-dominated “Bad Internet” we know today. For readers of a certain generation (older Millennials, mostly) this piece may resonate the way it did with me.
The terrific Curtis Sittenfeld is back with another great short story: The Richest Babysitter in the World. A prior pick— The Tomorrow Box—is a great read as well.
For the gamers out there, Planet Money’s episode Video Gaming The System is a fascinating look at the interaction between the retro game Old School RuneScape and the Venezuelan economy.
