Saving Time By Reducing Junk Mail. A Review of PaperKarma
Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew!
Last year, I wrote about my favorite tips for Reducing Junk Mail and Junk Calls. Those tips cost little to nothing and are great ways to reduce what often feels like an endless stream of junk mail and calls. For junk mail, OptOutPrescreen (free) is a great way to opt out of credit card offers, and DMAchoice ($5 for a 10-year membership) allows you to opt out of many other forms of junk mail.[1]
But after I did those things, the flow of physical junk mail slowed but did not abate. Each day, we still received at least two or three unsolicited catalogs and mailers. And so I took a more drastic step. I signed up for PaperKarma, which quickly became one of my favorite apps.[2]
PaperKarma is simple. First, I entered my address. Then, each time I receive a piece of junk mail, I take a quick photo of the address label. The app figures out who mailed it and notifies the sender to take you off their mailing list. In just a few months since purchasing it, I’ve “unsubscribed” from 40 junk lists, and often days go by without us receiving a single piece of junk mail. I’ve enjoyed the process so much that I added my parents’ address to the app and have them bring their junk mail by every couple of weeks so I can zap those as well.
The first four junk mail requests in PaperKarma are free, but further requests require a membership ($3.99/month, $15.99/six months, $24.99/year, or $59.99 for a lifetime membership), and I found coupon code “DJM30” for 30% off. I ended up purchasing a lifetime membership using a coupon, and I have no regrets. But if you’d like to go the free but more labor-intensive route, the website also has a free directory of opt-out instructions for most junk mailers.
