Don't Forget To Check The Warranty!
Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew!
In our house, things break all too often. But when they do, the first thing I check is the warranty.
Most consumer products and electronics have warranties ranging from months to years, and we’ve gotten free warranty replacements of our foaming soap dispenser ($70) which broke after about a year and a half, and our son’s beloved Bitzee (a $25 mini-Tamagotchi), which broke after about seven months, among other things.
And if you find the warranty has expired, it’s almost always worth politely contacting the manufacturer. More than once, a manufacturer has replaced an item after the warranty has expired just because I asked politely.
In general, asking nicely for things can be a superpower and has recently saved me $225 on a new J.Crew blazer, $83 in Citi foreign transaction fees, and worked for two readers as well. Have you had any nice recent wins just by being polite? I’d love to hear from you.
