Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew!
There’s a good chance you’ve received an email like this from Google before:
You have a couple of options when you’ve filled up your Google storage.
Delete Stuff (Free)
First, go to Google’s cleanup tool (scroll down past the Google One ad) and check to see if there are any large files, particularly large videos, you can easily delete.
Next, check your Gmail account and start searching for emails with large attachments that you can delete. Enter the search term “size:10mb has:attachment” (don’t include the quotation marks) in the Gmail search box. This will yield any emails with attachments over 10 megabytes. Then, delete any of these emails you don’t need.
Consider Paying For Google One ($1.99/month for 100GB and up)
After years of barely staying under the storage limit, I finally succumbed and signed up for Google One, which offers storage from 100 gigabytes to 50 terabytes, starting at $1.99/month. For a long time I resisted signing up, but finally decided the benefits were worth it.
In addition to storage, the plan we use includes 10% cash back at the Google Store, live support on any Google product, and three months of ad-free YouTube Premium, among other things.
And the storage space and benefits can be shared among up to five family members (who need not live in your household). Make sure to maximize your benefits by sharing space with family members who need it.
Consider Other Google Products That Offer Free Storage
A few Google products also offer free additional storage, among other benefits. Notably, Unlimited Plus phone plans through Google Fi include a year of YouTube Premium and 100GB of storage.
And if you use Pixel phones, you can subscribe to the Google Pixel Pass program, which combines a free phone every two years and several other Google products for $37/month. I haven’t found this worth it (even though I use a Pixel), but it’s worth considering if you always get a new Pixel every two years and subscribe to YouTube Premium.
And now, Andrew’s pick(s) of the week:
What is the Most Successful Hollywood Movie of All Time? (via The Browser). The Avatar franchise has grossed over $5 billion!? But My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Paranormal Activity each have a strong case to make using different criteria.
I like eggs, and egg prices have been a little crazy lately. But this idea never crossed my mind: Raising Chickens for Cheaper Eggs Gets Expensive Fast
I couldn’t agree more: Bosses Discover This Meeting Really Could Have Been an Email
And finally, This neighborhood in Texas where all the streets are references to the TV show 'Friends'
I hope this has been helpful. If you liked it, please share it on social media! Also, please send me your feedback, requests, and success stories.
Everyone's moving to these subscription models of monthly/yearly plans. Google has huge power to increase prices. Try moving all your photos from Google/Mac to anywhere else that's not their ecosystem, it's cumbersome.
Better to have them under our control especially for storage of photos and documents.
- How often do you even access all your digital content? It wasn't that frequent even with our physical memorabilia
- And what these storage services are offering us is redundancy (not losing them) and convenience.
I just keep multiple copies on actual physical storage (On my laptop and SD card/HDD and a Pen drive). Way cheaper.
