Best of 2020 - Saving Money Edition
Welcome to Saving Money with Andrew!
2020…was a year. During a very challenging year, I’ve really enjoyed writing the newsletter each week and, especially, connecting with readers. It’s been a much-needed distraction, and I look forward to a better 2021!
My favorite money-saving themed items for the year:
Favorite SMwA Issue - I’m very proud of my two-part series on negotiation (Part 1 and Part 2). Negotiation is an unbelievably underrated way to reach better outcomes in a wide range of situations.
An honorable mention goes to One Month Later...How A Bunch of LED Bulbs Are Saving Us Over $2000 Per Year. If your home is filled with incandescent or CFL bulbs, I urge you to order some affordable LED bulbs and join the club.
Favorite Book - The Psychology of Money: Timeless Lessons on Wealth, Greed, and Happiness. This is an enjoyable read about how we think about money, lifestyle, risk, and other related topics.
Favorite Long-Form Magazine Article - This New Yorker piece about WeWork does a good job of capturing the absolute insanity of the rise and fall of the co-working company, with plenty of crazy anecdotes.
Favorite Deals Website - Slickdeals is my daily go-to for extremely good deals and discounts, especially during hot shopping periods like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Be careful not to get carried away with the deals, but I find it useful to visit daily to see if there is a deal on something I was planning to buy anyway.
Favorite Podcast - Planet Money is a fun bi-weekly podcast of short and very accessible segments that touch on money and the economy in some way. Very listenable, and does a great job of explaining complex topics in a way that’s entertaining and easy to understand.
Favorite Blog - Of Dollars and Data is a great blog about personal finance. 99% of personal finance blogs out there are either (i) filled with bad advice, (ii) loaded with ads, or (iii) promoting some product sold by the blog author. I don’t agree with him on everything, but this one has some interesting things to say.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year, and see you in 2021!
